The objective of this CFD study was to compare the aerodynamic performance of a turbine stage for several new designs. The stage was composed of a volute, stator vanes, and a wheel.

A high quality multi-block structured mesh was generated using NUMECA's AutoGrid5™and IGG™ software. The mesh contained 5 million cells and included the volute and the vanes in 360°. NUMECA's FINE™/Turbo CFD software was used to run 3D Navier-Stokes mixing plane calculations.

Dedicated scripts were then generated for automatic post-processing of the different designs. The resulting flow analysis included global performances as well as flow streamlines, velocity, pressure fields and blade loads.

The picture above shows the volute's high quality structured mesh combined with the vanes and wheel geometry.
