The objective of the project was to determine the flow configuration in a heat recovery ventilation system, in order to highlight recirculation areas and compute pressure loss of the components. The geometry included several complex channels, the heat exchanger, the fans and the volutes.

 

NUMECA's FINE™/Open software suite was used to run CFD simulations. Porous media were used in order to simulate the pressure drop inside the heat exchanger, without meshing the geometrical details of the plates. The heat transfer was not modeled for the study.

 

Post-processing of the flow solutions included velocity magnitude and total pressure contours in several cuttings planes throughout the ventilation, as well as local velocities to be compared with existing experimental measurements.
